How I search for Flight Deals on my Own
My favorite site to find flight deals: Skyscanner.com - Type in your closet airports as your starting location and for your Destination type click "Can't Decide Where? Click Here for Everywhere". Then either search by months or play around with the dates for the cheapest flight options.
You can potentially do this with Google Flights and other flight search sites, but Skyscanner is my favorite.

How to cope with Budget Airline Restrictions without losing your mind.
Be prepared to weigh and measure your luggage
Bring your own snacks.
Bring extra snacks on the way there. As you eat through your snacks you create space in your bag for luggage on the way back.
Bring a Travel Water Bottle to fill up on water at the airport before your flight.
Wear a jacket with lots of pockets to keep belongings and
Bring a foldable bag along in case you need to expand or consolidate items.
Make sure your personal item can fit into your carry-on if you need to consolidate.
Baggage Restrictions by Airlines
The most important part of traveling on a dime is figuring out how to pack lighter. I caught a budget flight recently and roundtrip for my checked or carryon bag alone was $150. With $150, that's 2 excurstions or 3 meals, or an extra night in a hotel, or my taxi ride to and from the airport. When traveling on a budget, remember that it's about new experiences, not having 50 different outfit changes. Consider packing wardrobe basics that you can use interchangeably with outfits. It's easier to pack lighter when visitng warm climates where you are wearing bathing suits ansd coverups everyday. However, I was able to do a 2 week winter trip to Europe and carried everything in a backpack (as my carryon) and a large purse (as my personal item). I did this by wearing my heaviest clothing on travel days. If you are truly backpacking you might want to find a local laundromat to do laundry. That shouldn't cost no more than $5.

Why Hostels are Awesome! And why they are not!
Hostels = a lower-priced inn that offers basic accommodations, shared rooms and bathrooms. Unless there are private rooms available, you will stay in a shared room with other travelers. Typically, you bring a lock to store your valuables in your locker.
I've stayed in around 10-15 hostels all around the world. I love the sense of community that hostels offer. For me, if I don't plan to spend a lot of time in the hotel, and I know that the trip will be spend exploring all day and into the evening, then hostels work for me. I've also done a lot of solo travel, so hostels were a great way for me to meet other solo travelers coming from different parts of the world.
Here are all of the places (that I can remember) where I stayed in a hostel: Brussels, Amsterdam, Dubai, Phnom Penh Cambodia, Singapore, Iceland, Vienna Austria, Dublin Ireland, Berlin Germany, Copenhagen Denmark, London England
Even now that I'm not a struggling college/grad student, I would still choose to stay in hostels when travelling solo. I may spring the extra $30 a night for a private room LOL!
Pros and Cons of Hostels
Pros
Meet people from all over the world
I stayed in hostels in Dubai and Thailand and met people from the UK, the Philippines, Germany, Brazil, Argentina, and Australia.
Good for Solo Travel

Cons
Stigmatized
If you are in a dorm room, unless the hostel provides a lock and locker for your belongings, you can't secure your belongings. Most hostels do, but check to be sure. Sometimes the lockers are not big enough for large suitcases since hostels cater more to backpack travelers.
Things to look for when researching hostels.
