Thailand

Thailand means Land of the Free. I visited Thailand in 2017 and I still have some of the best memories from being there.

I would go back to Thailand in a Heartbeat. I only really explored Bangkok, but some of my travel friends recommend visiting Chiang Mai and most well-known Phuket Island and the Phi Phi Islands.

Language: Thai or Siamese

Currency: Thai Baht (Current Exchange Rate)

Pros

  • Cheap

  • Cultural Experience

  • Delicious Food

  • Instagram Worthy Photo and Video Opportunities

Cons

  • Hot

  • People have gotten food poisoning from street food. (Not me, but people I know have.)

  • Bad Traffic in urban areas

  • Language barrier since all people don't speak English or don't speak English well (also the English names we know for common attractions sometimes have different Thai Names. If you ask someone to take you to the Temple of the Dawn, they don't know where that is.;But if you call it Wat Arun, then they know what you are talking about.)

Weird Facts and Blog Notes

  • There's a 7 Eleven everywhere, it seems like. How funny is that.

  • Don't forget to eat a scorpion

  • The amount of English spoken in Thailand is reassuring to a travelling American like me. The signs were all in both Thai and English. I passed a KFC, a Bruker King, and many a McDonalds. Seeing home comforts, takes a lot of fear out of travelling solo. But on the other hand it takes away from the authenticity of the experience.

EXCURSIONS

When I'm traveling with a group, I like to book excursions because it seems easier and transportation is usually included. However, I did not book excursions for Thailand because the cost of tuk tuks and taxis were so cheap. Also, the entry prices to museums and temples are cheap, if not free. However, in case you want to, here are some excursions can book.

Bangkok Itinerary

Day 1 - Khao San Road

  • Khao San Road Temples (Dress code: pants, no shorts, no short skits, no sleeveless t-shirts; must carry sarong or scarf to cover up if not dress appropriately)

    • Wat Pho aka Reclining Buddha - Tickets: 100 Baht - Open 8am - 5pm - A Must see!

      • Taxi to Wat Pho from Khao San Road - 70 baht

      • 10 minute walk to Grand Palace; located behind the temple of the Emerald Buddha

      • Across from Wat Pho is a chain of eateries

    • Grand Palace - A Must see!

      • 22 minute walk from Khao San Road; 12 minute drive

      • Go early in the morning, because its packed in the afternoon

      • In the Grand Place Complex , there are a number of other temples such as:

        • Wat Phra Kaew aka Emerald Buddha - Tickets: 400 Baht, Open 8:30am - 3:30pm

          • It's kind of small, but the building is beautiful

    • Wat Arun aka Temple of the Dawn - Tickets: 50 Baht ~$1.11

      • Best to see at Sunrise

      • I went to Wat Arun and guess who I ran into, a couple that lived in DC. I travel all the way across the world to bump into someone from my own backyard.

      • Across the river - take ferry - 2 Baht

  • Khao San Road Night life - bars, street food, live music

    • Walking Khao San Road at night was a lively bustling experience. I would compare it to a less intoxicated Bourbon Street LOL. Here they have a lot of interesting street food. You can eat crickets, scorpions, and all types of delicacies. I know it sounds weird but I felt like I hit #ThailandTravelGoals when I ate a Scorpion and washed it down with a Thailand local beer, Chang. There are many bars and restaurants on Khao San Road. I ended my ending finding a rooftop bar and enjoying the view of the bustling Khao San Road from the balcony. That's when I was able to truly take a break and be thankful for how exciting it was and how blessed I felt to be in Thailand.

  • Pet a Tiger

    • Tiger Temple is closed and had a lot of scandal associated with the treatment of its animals.

    • I visited the Kanchanaburi Safari Park Open Zoo

Budget Travel

Hostel:

  • I stayed at the Pillow Hostel Khaosan. When booking the hostel for 3 nights, I thought it would cost me $30 a night. When I went to check out, I found out that the stay was actually $10 a night, so $30 total. THB 1080 to be exact! This was for 1 Bed in a 6-Bed Dormitory. However, the 1st night I was alone, the second night there was 1 other person and the 3rd night there were maybe 4 people total.
